De Zuid-Koreaanse boysband BTS is de grote winnaar geworden op de American Music Awards. De zevenkoppige boysband werd genomineerd voor drie awards, waaronder de belangrijke Artist of the Year-award, en wist die ook alle drie te verzilveren.

Dat de American Music Awards (AMA’s) dit jaar in het teken van BTS zouden staan, stond al in de sterren geschreven. De Zuid-Koreaanse boysband mocht twee keer optreden. Normaal ging dat een keer met Coldplay en een keer met Megan Thee Stallion zijn. Maar die laatste moest om persoonlijke redenen afzeggen, waardoor BTS zijn megahit Butter alleen bracht. BTS mocht uiteindelijk naast hun optredens nog eens drie keer het podium op om een award op te halen.

Artist of the Year

BTS stond gisteravond voor de eerste keer sinds twee jaar opnieuw op een podium voor een livepubliek. Het was dan ook een gebeurtenis die de fans van de groep niet wilden missen. Het publiek van de AMA’s was dan ook voornamelijk gevuld door ARMY’s, de fans van BTS, en die lieten duidelijk van zich horen. Maar ook verschillende artiesten gingen tijdens de show naar de zetels van BTS om een selfie te scoren.

De groep was drie keer genomineerd: voor Favorite Pop Duo or Group, Favorite Pop Song (Butter) en de belangrijkste award van de avond, Artist of the Year. En ze konden deze drie nominaties verzilveren. Tijdens hun speeches, die ze altijd op hun eigen manier doen, bedankten ze hun trouwe fans dan ook uitvoerig. BTS is de eerste Aziatische artiest en eerste niet-Engelstalige artiest ooit die de AMA voor Artist of the Year in ontvangst mag nemen.

Ook Megan Thee Stallion en Doja Cat wonnen elk drie awards. Zij konden allebei niet aanwezig zijn bij de uitreiking. Olivia Rodrigo, die met zeven nominaties de meest genomineerde artiest was, wist uiteindelijk maar één van die zeven te verzilveren. Zij ging naar huis met de award voor New Artist of the Year.
